Karachi; 5th Worst City to Live in the World !!!!

Few years back, I was driving my way to office I came across huge congratulation hoardings on the Shahrah E Faisal " Congratulations to City Nazim “Mayor” Karachi for taking second slot in the best global mayor list". The moment I read, fragile infrastructure of city came in my mind, only 50 millimeter rain could create havoc, electrocution related deaths in rainy season, pollution, violence, street crimes, traffic and ugly unsafe billboards. I ignored congratulation message because of doubts in my mind.
Today, I came across Economist Intelligence Unit 2010 livability rating, it assesses the livability of 140 cities world wide. Karachi ranked 135 out of 140; the 5th worst city to live in the world.“The Economist Intelligence Unit’s livability rating quantifies the challenges that might be presented to an individual's lifestyle in 140 cities worldwide. Each city is assigned a score for over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories: Stability, Healthcare, Culture and environment, Education and Infrastructure".

At times I wonder, billions of rupees are spent on infrastructure development of Karachi, still status is no more than a global slum. It is easy to get answers, everyone can see level of short sightedness, poor quality of leadership, tunnel vision, ethnic tension, street crimes, sleepy civil society, lack of planning, and land grabbing. It seems it is a city run by robber barons and no one owns it!!!!!!

One may wonder why 5th place !!! the way things are going it is not far when Karachi would be ranked the top worst city.
Is there anything we can be proud of??? Except running intolerant jihad factories and nuclear weapons!!!!

I don't agree with this.
I guess,You never have lived in any of these top 50 cities. But I happened to.
Talking of one,ie.New york,I recived a handout on my arrival to my hotel which said that "If your are a teenage women, then don't leave alone after 9 pm if you didn't wish to be raped. And if you are a man than don't carry more than $10 because of "crones".
I don't suppose Karachi's the same.
Whoever does these surveys never see Karachi properly but rank according to news and current affairs.

Zehra thanks for your reply, i am just sharing Economist's findings, you have right to disagree.

Well, i spent days in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, London, Newyork, Washington, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Charllote etc long list, not to impress anyone but to reply your guess.

You are talking about safety, Economist talked beyond that such as Culture, Education, Infrastructure and Environment, then look at larger picture.

Who else can tell the difference, my family is living here since 1750 and i can feel it, unlike post partition immigrants !!!!

Waisay, Newyork is not in top 10 list.

One suggestion, look at the state of Safety, Education, Envrionment, Culture and Infrastructure in Karachi and compare it with DHAKA or Colombo, you will get answer.

I have recently had to live in karachi for a year and i agree with the economist ...a lil rain deprived me from water and electricity for three days however i WAS drowning in water ...every instruction to any place u wanted to go could include yeah just turn next to the trash heap...and security hmm if u were unfortunate like me and living on the wrong side of the bridge u d get a lot of calls from a frantic mom asking u to stay indoors... karachi was once the pride of pakistan and the people i met there were the best and the infrastructure work done is incredible and can by no means be ignored... but the fact remains water and security are far more basic and important
